Sega CD

The Sega CD was an attachment to the Sega Genesis to keep the lifespan of the Genesis alive long into the 32-bit era of gaming. It was meant to compete with the PC Engine CD in Japan (known as the Turbo Grafx CD in US). The add-on was introduced in the US in October of 1992. It was never well received due to a small game selection and several poor FMV (full motion video) games. However it is still fondly looked upon for original titles such as Sonic The Hedgehog CD and the Lunar RPG series. Though the Sega CD was short lived it did sell over 6 million units and saw two versions each one made to fit different versions of the Genesis.
