TurboGrafx-16

The TurboGrafx-16 (or PC Engine in Japan) was introduced in August 1989 to the US. It was developed by Hudson Soft to be a 16-bit competitor to the Sega Genesis and the still 8-bit NES. The games were released on computer chips that looked like cards and were referred to as HuCards. The system was made popular by such hits as Splatterhouse and Bonk's Adventure. The TurboGrafx later saw a CD-Rom add-on and was the first in the US to have such a peripheral. The console never reached mass appeal in the US and was discontinued in 1995 selling only 2.5 million units. However the system saw great success in Japan, lasting until 1999 and sold 7.5 million units outside America.
